16-17, a Swiss industrial punk jazz band, was formed in 1983 by Alex Buess, Knut Remond, and Markus Kneubühler. The group featured Kneubühler as a guitarist and electronics specialist. Their early concerts featured an explosive mix of improvised music, heavily amplified instruments, and electronics, making them pioneers in the Jazzcore genre. In 1984, they released their first recording, Buffbunker & Hardkore, followed by the album 16-17 in 1986 and When All Else Fails... in 1989. The band's breakthrough came with the studio album Gyatso (1994), produced by Kevin Martin of Godflesh, which featured contributions from G.C. Green. This album garnered significant international attention. In 1995, the group underwent a lineup change and continued to tour extensively across Europe. The band released the EP Mechanophobia in 1999 before disbanding in 2000.
