13 Engines were a Canadian alternative rock ensemble from Toronto active between 1985 and 1997. The group was established by the musicians John Critchley, Mike Robbins, Jim Hughes, and Grant Ethier. Their recording career began with the independent recording The Ikons (1986) before they adopted the name 13 Engines. They achieved professional recognition for the track "Beached" (1989), which became a college hit. Their discography includes the studio recordings Before Our Time (1987), Byram Lake Blues (1989), and A Blur to Me Now (1991). In 1993, they released the studio recording Perpetual Motion Machine, which featured the tracks "More" (1993), "Smoke & Ashes" (1993), and "Bred in the Bone" (1993). Their discography includes the studio recording Conquistador (1995), which featured the track "Beneath My Hand" (1995). The ensemble became inactive in 1997 following a performance at the NXNE festival.
