The Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1871 in Zagreb, Croatia, is a Croatian symphony orchestra. The ensemble originated from the opera ensemble of the Croatian National Theatre. In 1870, Ivan Zajc established a professional concert ensemble for the national theatre. They officially formed as a philharmonic orchestra in 1919 under the encouragement of violinist Dragutin Arany, and changed their name to the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra on October 3, 1920. Notable chief conductors included Kazushi Åno, Vjekoslav Å utej, and David Danzmayr. They released numerous albums, including Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1 / Shostakovich: Symphony No. 1, Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 and 2 (1988), and Verdi, Puccini, Wagner: Opera Arias (2011). The orchestra gave their concerts principally at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall and the Croatian National Theatre.
