Biography

Wojciech Kilar (born 17 July 1932 in Lviv, died 29 December 2013 in Katowice) was a Polish composer and pianist whose career covered classical music and film scoring. After early training in Poland, he gained recognition with the 1955 Solemn Overture, establishing his reputation in the classical arena. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Kilar scored feature films such as Le Roi et l'Oiseau (1980), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Death and the Maiden (1995), The Pianist (2002), and The Ninth Gate (1999). His concert works, including the September Symphony – Lament (2003) and the 2014 recording Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 – Barcarolle, show continued activity until his final years. Kilar’s legacy endures through performances of his compositions and posthumous releases.
