Wim Mertens, born on May 14, 1953, in Neerpelt, is a Flemish composer, pianist, countertenor, guitarist, and musicologist. He studied political and social sciences at the University of Louvain before turning to music, influenced by minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass. He began his career as a producer at the Belgian television network BRT (now VRT) in 1978. His breakthrough came with the release of For Amusement Only and At Home - Not At Home in 1980, followed by notable works like "Struggle for Pleasure" and "Close Cover" in 1983. He composed music for various films, including Peter Greenaway's The Belly of an Architect in 1986, Louis Dellucâs La Femme de nulle part in 1993, and Paul Coxâs Father Damien in 1999. He was named Cultural Ambassador of Flanders in 1998. His compositions have been featured in numerous advertisements, notably the jingle for Proximus. Throughout his career, he has released around sixty recordings, including albums like Receptacle (2007), That Which Is Not (2018), and Ranges of Robustness (2024)
