Biography

Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester are an Austrian classical orchestra from Vienna, formed in 1966. The ensemble was created under the auspices of Oskar Goger and the ORF to recreate the touring orchestra of Johann Strauss I. The musicians were selected from the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Radio Orchestra. Eduard Strauss II, the nephew of Johann Strauss III, served as the first conductor and led a tour in North America in 1966. Willi Boskovsky subsequently served as principal conductor and recorded with the group for the label EMI. Franz Bauer-Theussl, Alfred Eschwé, and Martin Sieghart also conducted the ensemble. Since 2008, Johannes Wildner has conducted the orchestra at the Musikverein on the national day of Austria. Strauss died in 1969.
