Biography

John Anthony Wilfahrt, known professionally as Whoopee John, was an American polka musician born on May 11, 1893, in New Ulm, Minnesota. He started playing the concertina at local events and moved to Saint Paul in the 1920s, performing regularly at live shows and on the radio. His commercial recording career began in the same decade with Vocalion Records, and he signed with Decca Records' U.S. division in 1934. Throughout the 1940s and 50s, Wilfahrt and his band were popular on the polka circuit, recording nearly 1,000 songs including "Mariechen Waltz" and "Clarinet Polka". He passed away from a heart attack on June 15, 1961, at the age of 68. In 1976, he was posthumously inducted into the International Polka Association's Hall of Fame.
