Biography

What Cheer? Brigade is an American brass band from Providence, Rhode Island, formed in 2005. The group, which features approximately 18 members, performs a variety of world styles including Bollywood, Balkan brass, klezmer, hip hop, and rock. Drawing inspiration from street brass bands in New York and San Francisco, the ensemble held its first rehearsals in India Point Park. The group's debut studio album, Jerk Parade, was released in 2007. In 2010, the ensemble won the Best in Festival award at the Haizetara Street Music International Contest in Spain. The group also received the "Best Category-Defying Act" from the Providence Phoenix Best Music Poll in 2007 and 2010. The band has performed at festivals including HONK!, the Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza, and has collaborated with artists such as B. Dolan and the band Blondie. The group's discography includes the studio albums We Blow, You Suck (2008) and You Can't See Inside of Me (2017), as well as the live recording Classy: Live in Pawtucket (2011). In the early 2020s, the band officially changed its name to Undertow Brass Band to distance itself from the colonialist connotations of the Providence city motto.
