Biography

Wally Shoup, born on August 9, 1944 in North Carolina, was an American alto saxophonist, painter, and author who became a key figure in Seattle’s improvised music scene in 1985. His early career included teaching, radio work at KRCC, and founding the Creative Music Ensemble in Colorado. Shoup’s debut recording, Scree‑Run Waltz (1981), launched his recording career, followed by forming the 1994 Project W with cellist Brent Arnold. He collaborated with Thurston Moore on Hurricane Floyd (1999) and recorded Live at Tonic (2003), Immolation / Immersion (2005), and Suite: Bittersweet (2007). Shoup performed at major festivals and received a City of Seattle Arts grant in 2007. He passed away on March 5, 2024.
