His first commercial release was a self‑titled EP on Columbia Records in May 2004, featuring the tracks "Joanna" and "Half a Man", which led to a debut album Feather and Stone recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios and released on 30 July 2004; the album entered the Official UK Charts Top 75 and received regular BBC Radio 2 airplay. In 2007 he released the single "Better" and the album Skybound on his independent label Sylvan, the latter reaching the UK Top 20 and earning critical acclaim; singles such as "Better" and "Miracle" were featured in film and television soundtracks. Baxter collaborated with acts including David Grey, Damien Rice, and Katie Melua, and supported Nerina Pallot in 2007. In 2009 "My Declaration" was covered by Eliza Bennett for the film Inkheart, and "Almost There" was recorded by Dame Shirley Bassey. After a hiatus, he returned in 2018 with acoustic albums The Other Side Of Blue and The Uncarved Block, and in 2021 composed music for ARTE France’s documentary series Wild Costa Rica, A Sanctuary of Biodiversity.
