Biography
Thomas Fey, born on November 9, 1960 in Germany, was a conductor and violinist who studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim. He founded the Heidelberger Motettenchor (1985) and the Schlierbacher Kammerorchester (1987), which became the Heidelberger Sinfoniker in 1993. Thomas Fey conducted these ensembles across Europe and the Americas, focusing on Baroque, Classical, and early Romantic works. Notable collaborations included Rudolf Buchbinder and Nelson Freire. In 1991, he initiated the annual Heidelberger Mozartwochen festival, later expanding it to La Passione in 2003. Thomas Fey also founded the Mannheimer Mozartorchester in 2003, debuting on January 27, 2006. His recordings, released through Hänssler Verlag, include works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Mendelssohn Bartholdy, with nominations for the Cannes Classical Award (2003) and Grammy Award (2010). Following a severe accident in 2014, Thomas Fey retired from his musical activities. He died on June 27, 2026, at the age of 65.
