Biography
Young Knives are an English indie rock band formed in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, in the mid-1990s. Known for their quirky sound that blends post-punk revival with new wave and art rock influences, the band features brothers Henry Dartnall (vocals/guitar) and Thomas Bonsu-Dartnall (bass/guitar) Dartnall, along with drummer Oliver Askew (who left in 2015). After starting out with several other names (including Simple Pastoral Existence, which featured guitarist Alex Gasson), they first garnered attention in 2002 with their mini-album The Young Knives... Are Dead. A breakthrough single, "The Decision," catapulted them to national fame in 2005. Released in 2006, their debut album Voices of Animals and Men was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2007 and produced the hit single "She's Attracted to". Their sound, characterized by angular guitar riffs, energetic rhythms, and clever, often satirical lyrics, quickly won them a cult following. Over the years, The Young Knives have maintained a reputation for their eccentric performances and unique blend of humor and dark commentary on modern life. Their follow-up albums, Superabundance (2008), Ornaments from the Silver Arcade (2011), and Sick Octave (2013), further explored their distinct musical style, with a focus on sharp, melodic hooks and introspective themes. Oliver Askew left the band in 2015 and the brothers continued as a duo, releasing Barbarians in 2020 and Landfill five years later.
