Biography

The Temprees were an American soul vocal trio formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in the mid‑1960s by Jasper “Jabbo” Phillips, Harold “Scotty” Scott, and Deljuan “Del” Calvin, who met while attending junior high school. Their early performances in local clubs led to a signing with Stax Records’ subsidiary We Produce in 1970, where producer Josephine “Jo” Bridges introduced them to a wider audience. In 1972 the group released their debut album Lovemen and performed before more than 100,000 fans at the Wattstax festival, solidifying their reputation in the soul scene. Subsequent albums Love Maze (1973) and Temprees 3 (1974) followed, with the single "Dedicated to the One I Love" reaching Number 17 on the R&B chart and Number 93 on the pop chart in 1972. After Stax’s collapse, the trio briefly joined Epic Records in 1976, issuing the single "I Found Love On A Disco Floor" before returning to We Produce for a greatest‑hits compilation, The Best Of The Temprees (1984). The band disbanded in the late 1970s but reunited in the 1990s, releasing Because We Love You (2000) on High Stacks Records; lead singer Jasper “Jabbo” Phillips died on February 21, 2001, and was succeeded by Jerry “JC” Calvin. A later studio album, From The Heart (2016), included a cover of Earth, Wind & Fire’s "Reasons", marking the group’s final contribution to the soul genre.
