Biography

The Satintones were an American R&B group formed in the late 1950s. The original members included Charles "Chico" Leverett, Sonny Sanders, James Ellis, and Robert Bateman. They are notable as the first group to record for Motown Records, signing with Tamla Records in January 1959. Their debut single "Going to the Hop" was released in July 1959. The group recorded several more singles for Motown, including "My Beloved", though they never achieved a significant hit. Leverett left the group in 1961, leading to a lineup change. The Satintones disbanded at the end of 1961 after recording two more singles. A large amount of unreleased material was finally compiled into The Satintones Sing! The Complete Tamla and Motown Singles Plus, released in 2009.
