American girl group, The Raelettes, formed in 1958, were initially established as backing vocalists for Ray Charles. The group was reformed from another all-girl singing group called The Cookies and consisted of Darlene McCrea, Margie Hendricks, Patricia Lyles, and Gwendolyn Berry. They provided backing vocals on various hits by Ray Charles, including "Night Time Is the Right Time" (1958), "What'd I Say" (1959) and "Hit the Road Jack" (1961). Between 1966 and 1973, The Raelettes recorded on Tangerine Records as a separate act produced and accompanied by Charles. Their notable releases during this period include the albums Souled Out (1970) and Yesterday...Today...Tomorrow (1972), along with singles such as "One Hurt Deserves Another" (1967), "I'm Gettin' 'Long All Right" (1968), and "Bad Water" (1971). The group's lineup was ever-changing, featuring notable members like Merry Clayton, Clydie King, Edna Wright, and Susaye Greene. After Mable John sang lead vocals in the 1970s, The Raelettes toured independently of Charles before returning to background vocals for him until his death in 2004.
