Biography

Born out of Spanish Harlem’s mid-’60s boogaloo boom, The Latin Souls formed around vocalists Douglas Rodriguez, Frank Ruiz, Anthony Flores, and Sammy Marrero, shaping a harmony-driven blend of Latin rhythm and R&B. Their debut LP Boo-Ga-Loo & Shing-A-Ling appeared on Kapp Records in 1967, pairing originals with savvy covers and yielding the signature single “La Banda,” issued that year as the B-side to “The Party Is Over” under producer Pancho Cristal. The record also featured cuts like “Hey Lulu,” “Guajira Controversial,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and “A Place in the Sun,” spotlighting the group’s tight coros over crisp percussion and brass. Building on that momentum, The Latin Souls returned circa 1968 with the Kapp follow-up often circulated as Tiger Boo-Ga-Loo, fronted by the single “I’ve Got You” backed with “Look But Don’t Touch,” plus repertoire such as “Pata Pata,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” and “You’ve Been Talking About Me Baby.” Across this short but concentrated run, the quartet bridged doo-wop-style harmonies with the street-level punch of New York boogaloo, leaving a compact catalog whose highlight remains “La Banda”—a staple on later Latin-soul anthologies and DJ sets—before members drifted to other projects as salsa eclipsed boogaloo by the decade’s end.
