The First Class, a British pop music studio-based group, was formed in 1974 by songwriter and record producer John Carter. The group initially consisted of Carter, Tony Burrows, and Chas Mills, with Carter hiring Burrows and Mills to perform material he wrote alongside his creative partner and wife, Gillian (Jill) Shakespeare. Their breakthrough came with the release of "Beach Baby", which peaked at number 13 in the UK and number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. The song was praised for its "perfect surfin' arrangement" and compared to the work of The Beach Boys. Following this success, The First Class released their eponymous debut album The First Class in September, 1974. Despite some demand for live performances, neither Carter nor Burrows had the time or interest in touring, leading to a separate quintet being assembled for live shows. Subsequent singles like "Bobby Dazzler" and "Dreams Are Ten a Penny" failed to replicate the success of "Beach Baby". The group's second album, SST, was released in December 1976 but did not achieve significant chart success. By the mid-1980s, The First Class had effectively disbanded, with members pursuing other ventures. Notable posthumous releases include Beach Baby: The Very Best of The First Class in October 1999 and Beach Baby: The Complete Recordings in 2023.
