Biography

The Coal Porters, a British-American bluegrass band based in London, were formed in 1989 and led by Sid Griffin. The group initially began as a country-rock outfit led by Griffin and Neil Robert Herd, with early releases including the albums Rebels Without Applause (1991) and Los London (1995). The band's transition to bluegrass came after producing Lindisfarne’s Here Comes The Neighborhood in 1998. Notable albums from their bluegrass phase include How Dark This Earth Will Shine (2004) and Turn the Water On, Boy! (2008), which featured collaborations with artists like Chris Hillman and Peter Case. Their final album, No. 6, was released in 2016. The Coal Porters disbanded in July 2018.
