Biography
The Charles River Valley Boys are an American bluegrass group formed in 1959 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by students from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The core performers included Eric Sackheim, Bob Siggins, Clay Jackson, and Ethan Signer. The ensemble performed at venues such as Tulla's Coffeehouse and appeared on the radio station WHRB. In 1962, the group released the albums Bringin' in the Georgia Mail and Bluegrass and Old Timey Music. By 1964, the lineup evolved to include John Cooke and Fritz Richmond for the recording of Blue Grass Get Together. Following the departure of Signer, Cooke, and Richmond, the group recruited Joe Val, Jim Field, and Everett Allen Lilly. This lineup recorded the 1966 album Beatle Country, produced by Paul Rothchild for Elektra Records, which featured bluegrass versions of songs by the Beatles. The group became inactive in 1968. Beatle Country was reissued on CD by Rounder Records in 1995. Siggins died on September 22, 2023, at the age of 85.
