Biography

Injecting emotional vulnerability, crooning vocals and orchestral touches into their electrifying guitar and piano epics, beloved rockers Tai Chi sat at the top table of Hong Kong's fertile band scene in the 1980s and maintained a dedicated fanbase over subsequent decades. Formed in 1985 by Patrick Lui (lead vocalist), Albert Lui (lead vocalist), Joey Tang (guitarist), Gary Tong (keyboardist), Ernest Lau (guitarist), Eddy Sing (bass guitarist and backing vocal), and Ricky Chu (drummer), Tai Chi released their debut album, 紅色跑車 (Red Sports Car) in 1986 and a second album, 迷, (Fan) followed that same year. The band enjoyed popularity and mainstream success during the late 1980s, spawning hits including "Keep Me," "Every Sentence" and "Light Rain Falls on My Chest," before the lineup began shifting in the 1990s, with a number of members launching solo albums. Tai Chi continued performing live, staging a series of concerts for their 27th anniversary at the Hung Hom Coliseum in 2012 and in January 2017, scooped Hong Kong's prestigious Golden Needle Award, bestowed by the Radio Hong Kong at the Top Ten Chinese Golden Melody Awards Concert. In March 2021, Tai Chi keyboardist Gary Tong died of a heart attack at the age of 57.
