Gaby Moreno is a Guatemalan singer-songwriter whose eclectic music style seamlessly combines genres like folk, blues, jazz, and R&B with a wide variety of Latin rhythms. Born MarÃa Gabriela Moreno Bonilla on December 16, 1981, in Guatemala City, she moved to the US after graduating high school to pursue a career in music and enrolled at Los Angeles' Musicians Institute. Still the Unknown, her studio debut, was released in 2009 to great critical acclaim, prompting invitations from Tracy Chapman and Ani Difranco to join them on tour. The album was followed in 2010 by a second independent release titled Illustrated Songs as she received her first Emmy nomination for her work on the opening theme to the American sitcom Parks & Recreation. After featuring in the 2011 Ricardo Arjona hit single "Fuiste Tú," Gaby Moreno delivered her third full-length, Postales (2012), which helped her take home a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist in 2013. That year, she also made an appearance on Hugh Laurie's second album, Didn't It Rain, and accompanied the British actor on tour throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America. Over the next few years, the Guatemalan-born artist recorded a Christmas album (2014's Posada), sang the theme song to the 2016 Disney film Elena of Avalor, and returned later that year with her fifth LP, Ilusión. In 2019, Gaby Moreno collaborated with legendary composer and arranger Van Dyke Parks on the album ¡Spangled!, a collection of songs inspired by Latin American music that earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. AlegorÃa, her first solo outing since 2016's Ilusión, arrived in 2022 and featured guest spots by Jesse Harris, Ulises Hadjis, and a top-tier team of sessions musicians. "Por Qué Te Vas," her contribution to the soundtrack of the film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, followed in December of that year. In 2023, Gaby Moreno followed AlegorÃa with X Mà (Vol. 1), a stripped-back project that became a major career milestone when it won the 2024 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. She kept that momentum in 2024 with Dusk, co-produced with Dan Knobler, which included a standout collaboration with Oscar Isaac on âLuna de Xelajú,â and she also released the bolero-leaning single âAlma Florecidaâ with LA LOM. In 2025, Gaby Moreno expanded her work into film-forward storytelling with âLamento,â released as a short-film version and later an âExtended Cutâ that earned a 2025 Latin Grammy nomination in the long-form music video field; during the same Latin Grammy week, she appeared in the Person of the Year tribute to Raphael. She closed 2025 with the single âMy Way,â then moved into 2026 with a major new stage chapter, making her Broadway debut as Persephone in Hadestown in March.
