Stephen Yerkey, born Stephen McKay Yerkey on December 15, 1950 in Welch, West Virginia, is an American singer and songwriter known for his contributions to alternative country music. He began playing guitar at 14, influenced by Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Yerkey fronted the band Nonfiction from 1977 to 1987, releasing their eponymous album Nonfiction on Demon Records. In 1990, he contributed "The Final Word" to the AIDS benefit album Acoustic Music Project. Yerkey's solo debut, Confidence Man, was released in 1995 on Heyday Records and featured the song "Stay Close to Me", which appeared in the soundtrack of the 1997 movie Lewis & Clark & George. His subsequent albums include Up From Mo's (2003) and Metaneonatureboy (2006). In 2016, Nonfiction reunited for a single performance at the Hotel Utah in San Francisco with Yerkey again at the helm.
