Biography

St. Lawrence String Quartet was formed in 1989 at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto by Geoff Nuttall, Barry Shiffman, Lesley Robertson, and Marina Hoover. They won first prize in the Fourth Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1992. Their album, Schumann String Quartets Nos 1 & 3, was released in 1999. The quartet recorded for EMI and premiered works by John Adams and Ezequiel Viñao, among others. They won a Juno Award and a Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik for their recording of Robert Schumann's quartets. Geoff Nuttall passed away in October 2022, which led to a hiatus. In April 2024, the St. Lawrence String Quartet announced its disbandment at the close of the 2023-2024 season.
