The Soldier String Quartet, an American string quartet founded in 1984 by composer and violinist Dave Soldier, specialized in performing a fusion of classical and popular music. The group served as a training ground for many subsequent experimental classical groups and performers, including violinists Regina Carter and Todd Reynolds. From their inception to 2004, the quartet premiered over 100 compositions, including major works by Teo Macero, Leroy Jenkins, and Phill Niblock. The quartet's innovative approach to chamber music also included transcriptions of blues, jazz, and hip-hop, as well as arrangements of Jimi Hendrix pieces. Notable albums include Sequence Girls (1988), Sojourner Truth (1991), and Inspect for Damaged Gods (2004). They performed at venues ranging from CBGBs to Carnegie Hall and collaborated with numerous rock, pop, and jazz acts such as Guided by Voices, John Cale, and Bob Neuwirth.
