Sofia Vicoveanca, born Sofia Fusa in 1941 in ToporÄuÈi, CernÄuÈi County, was a Romanian singer of popular music and folk music. Escaping with her mother to the commune of Vicovu de Jos, she adopted her stage name out of love for this village. Sofia graduated from the Ècoala PopularÄ de ArtÄ in Suceava and won a competition to join the "Ciprian Porumbescu" Ensemble of Song and Dance in 1959. Her first album was released in 1965. Throughout her career, she performed as a soloist with Moldavia's folk music orchestra, the Ensemble "Rapsozii BotoÈanilor", and released solo albums including Bukovina Songs (2001) and Ästa-i joc din Bucovina (2006). Sofia Vicoveanca toured extensively, performing in Israel, Portugal, the United States, France, Denmark, Germany, and former Yugoslavia. She received numerous awards, including the Order of Cultural Merit and the Tudor Vladimirescu medal.
