Biography

Sleeping in the Aviary was an American indie rock band formed in Madison, Wisconsin, in 2004 by guitarist-vocalist Elliott Kozel and bassist Phil Mahlstadt. The group played its first show that spring and later added drummer Michael Sienkowski as a permanent member. In 2007, they released their debut album Oh, This Old Thing? and followed it with Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel in October 2008. Celeste Heule also joined the band in 2008, adding accordion and musical saw to their sound. The group's third album, Great Vacation!, was released in November 2010. In early 2011, Sleeping in the Aviary embarked on a nearly two-month tour before releasing their final album, You and Me, Ghost, in September of that year. The band disbanded in 2012.
