Self are an American pop rock ensemble from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, formed in 1993. The ensemble is led by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Matt Mahaffey and included guitarist Mike Mahaffey, keyboardist Chris James, bassist Mac Burrus, and drummer Jason Rawlings. Their recording career began with the studio recording Subliminal Plastic Motives (1995), which sold over 40,000 copies and featured the tracks âCannonâ (1995) and âSo Lowâ (1996). They released the studio recording The Half-Baked Serenade (1997) before signing with DreamWorks Records for the studio recording Breakfast with Girls (1999). The recording included the track âPaint by Numbersâ (1998). Their discography includes the studio recording Gizmodgery (2000), which was performed entirely with toy instruments and featured the track âTrunk Fulla Ampsâ (2000). Following the death of Mike Mahaffey in 2005, the ensemble became inactive in 2006. They resumed activity in 2012 and released the extended play Super Fake Nice (2014).
