Biography
Classical guitarist Sean Shibe was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1992. After attending the City of Edinburgh Music School and the Aberdeen City Music School, he attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he graduated with honors in 2012. He also studied in Austria at the Kunst-Universität Graz and in Italy under the guidance of Paolo Pegoraro. He began winning many honors early in his career including the Ivor Mairants Guitar Award (2009), and a Gold Medal, String Prize, and First Prize at the Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition (2011).He was named as one of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists between 2012 and 2015 and performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the Sinfonia Viva and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. Sean Shibe performed at many of classical music’s most prestigious festivals including the Brighton Festival, the St. Magnus Festival, the Marlboro Festival, the Aldeburgh Festival, and many others. Sean Shibe released his debut album, Dreams & Fancies: English Music for Solo Guitar (2017), which was honored with the Gramophone Editor’s Choice and BBC Music Magazine’s Instrumental Choice awards. His second album, softLOUD (2018), received the inaugural Gramophone Award for Concept Album of the Year. Two years later, his third album, Bach (2020), received the Gramophone Award for Instrumental Category. Signing with the PentaTone label in 2020, he released the album Camino (2021), which was followed by Lost & Found (2022). In 2023, he collaborated with tenor Karim Sulayman on the album Broken Branches, which earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album. That same year, Sean Shibe released the solo album Profesión, which featured his interpretations of works by Agustín, Alberto Ginastera, and Heitor Villa-Lobos.
