Biography

Sara Jordan Powell, born October 6, 1938 in Houston, Texas, was an American singer who began performing at age two. She graduated from Texas Southern University and apprenticed under Thomas A. Dorsey before joining the Sallie Martin Singers. Powell's breakthrough came in 1972 with "Touch Somebody's Life" and "When Jesus Comes", which gained significant radio airtime. Her debut album, Touch Somebody's Life, was produced by James Cleveland and released on Savoy Records in 1975. Throughout her career, she released several albums including I Must Tell Jesus (1980), Sara Jordan Powell (1990), When Jesus Comes to Stay (1990). She performed "Amazing Grace" at the White House for President Jimmy Carter in 1979. Powell was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to serve on the Year of the Bible Committee and passed away on November 16, 2025, at the age of 87.
