Samuel Lloyd Spence was an American composer renowned for his work with NFL Films. After attending the University of Southern California, he began his career as a music instructor in Munich. In 1966, he was hired to score mini-documentaries for NFL Films, where his orchestral compositions, combined with the voices of narrators like John Facenda and Pat Summerall, helped define the iconic sound of NFL highlights. Ed Sabol offered Spence a three-year contract to write, conduct, and produce music for the company, launching a decades-long collaboration. Over his career, he composed hundreds of short soundtrack scores. His music also appeared in EA Sportsâ Madden NFL video games, commercials, and other media. Spence passed away on February 6, 2016.
