Biography

Sam Carter is a renowned UK folk singer-songwriter from Rutland in the East Midlands who has carved a unique niche in the folk music scene, blending traditional influences with contemporary themes. He began making music in 2008 and in 2010 was named the winner of the Horizon Award for Best Newcomer at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. He introduced his sound with the Here in the Ground EP in 2008 and debut album Keepsakes in 2009, showcasing a masterful command of the guitar rooted in folk traditions. He channelled his interest in American gospel music into his next album The No Testament (2012) and joined forces with roots musician Jim Moray in 2014 to form the group False Lights, releasing two albums as a pair: Salvor (2015) and Harmonograph (2018). Over the years, he has collaborated with various other leading contemporary folk artists such as Nancy Kerr and Catherine MacLellan, further solidifying his reputation as a key figure in the modern folk revival. He released his fourth studio album Home Waters in 2020 and fifth LP Silver Horizon in 2024.
