Roger Muraro, born on May 13, 1959, in Lyon, France, is a distinguished classical pianist renowned for his interpretations of Olivier Messiaenâs music. Of Italian descent, Muraro began his musical journey with the saxophone before teaching himself piano and studying under Suzy Bossard at the Conservatoire de Lyon. At 17, he caught the attention of Yvonne Loriod, Messiaenâs wife, and later became her student at the Paris Conservatoire, earning first prizes in piano and chamber music. His career gained momentum after winning fourth prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1986 and receiving the Victoire de la Musique award for instrumental soloist. Muraroâs performances of Messiaenâs works, including Vingt Regards sur lâEnfant-Jésus, garnered praise from the composer himself for his technical brilliance and emotional depth. His recordings of Messiaenâs complete piano repertoire earned accolades such as the Diapason dâOr. He has also recorded Ravelâs complete piano works, which were highly acclaimed for their faithful yet original interpretations.
