Biography

Composer, musician and arranger, Jean Musy has collaborated with numerous French chanson artists, and signed several personal albums and film soundtracks. Born in Levallois-Perret on December 18, 1947, he began playing the Hammond organ in Paris jazz clubs. His meeting at the age of 16 with guitarist Mickey Baker, then Johnny Hallyday's accompanist, led to his first collaboration with Nino Ferrer, which lasted a year between concerts and the studio. Introduced to Joe Dassin, the musician was responsible for the arrangements of the famous classic "Les Champs-Élysées" in 1968. Les Champs-Élysées", before going on to work with a host of famous singers, including Dick Annegarn, Nicole Rieu, Nicole Croisille, Nicolas Peyrac, Il Était Une Fois, Barbara, Michel Jonasz, Yves Duteil, Mouloudji and Charles Aznavour, Véronique Sanson, Catherine Lara, Georges Moustaki, Françoise Hardy, Gilbert Bécaud, Serge Reggiani, Dalida, Mireille Mathieu, Adamo, Isabelle Aubret, Marie Laforêt, Daniel Guichard, Gérard Lenorman, Dave and Francis Lalanne. In 1976, Jean Musy met Francis Lai, with whom he worked on the orchestrations for the soundtrack of David Hamilton's film Bilitis, followed by Les Ringards (R. Pouret, 1978) and Claude Lelouch's Les Uns et les Autres. From then on, he was entrusted with the musical side of numerous feature films, including Clair de femme (1979), Le Cœur à l'envers (1980), Papy fait de la résistance (1983), Vanille fraise (1989), Noce blanche (1989) and L'Ange noir (1996), whose songs were performed by his wife Claire d'Asta. Jean Musy also composes for television, notably for the series Madame le proviseur, Pause café, Malone and Commissaire Moulin. He has also performed under his own name on the song albums Le Mal d'Aimer (1974) and Jean Musy (1976), and the instrumental discs Tribute to Ray Charles (on organ with orchestra, late 1960s), Rendez-Vous Solitaire avec la Musique (1979), L'Univers Musical d'Yves Duteil (1985) and, under the name Reflection, A Whiter Shade of Pale (1978). In 2016, he received the SACEM Grand Prix for music for images, and in 2018, the compilation Rétrospective Jean Musy gives an overview of his work for film and television. Jean Musy died on April 26, 2024 at the age of 76.
