Biography

Robert Knight, born Robert Henry Peebles on 21 April 1940 in Franklin, Tennessee, was an American soul and pop singer. He began his musical career as a member of the Paramounts, a quintet of school friends, and made his professional vocal debut with them. In 1960, they inked a deal with Dot Records and released "Free Me" in 1961, which became a US R&B hit single. After subsequent releases failed to make any commercial waves, the group parted ways. Robert Knight then attended Tennessee State University, where he sang with the Fairlanes, a vocal trio. In 1967, after performing with the group in Nashville, he was offered a solo contract by the Rising Sons label. His debut single "Everlasting Love" reached number 14 on the US R&B chart and number 13 on the Hot 100. The song achieved even greater success in the UK the following year, when a version by Love Affair reached number one, although Robert Knight's version only peaked at number 40. He amassed two additional pop hits with "Blessed Are the Lonely" and "Isn't It Lonely Together". In the 1970s, he re-entered the UK Singles Chart with the re-issue of his 1968 recording "Love on a Mountain Top", which reached number 10. His last taste of the charts came in 1974 with the release of "Better Get Ready for Love". Robert Knight passed away at home in Nashville, Tennessee, on 5 November 2017, aged 77.
