Richard Waldemar Oschanitzky was born on February 24, 1939, in TimiÈoara, Romania. He studied composition and conducting at the Bucharest Conservatory of Music from 1955 to 1959. Oschanitzky formed his jazz group "Freetet" in 1969, performing at notable venues like the Kammerspiele of the Deutsches Theater Berlin. Throughout the 1970s, he composed for classical orchestras and big bands, creating works like "Double Concert for Piano, Tenor Saxophone, Symphonic Orchestra, and Big Band". He also contributed to the soundtracks of 25 Romanian films. Despite facing an exit ban under Nicolae CeauÈescu's regime, Oschanitzky continued composing. He died on April 5, 1979. Posthumously, his work has been recognized through events like the annual Richard Oschanitzky International Jazz Festival and notable releases include Memorial Richard Oschanitzky Vol. I (2006) and Vol. II (2014).
