Biography

Reverend Billy C. Wirtz, born William McLean Wirths on September 28, 1954 in Aiken, South Carolina, is an American blues musician, comedian, and writer known for his comedy routines set to music. He began playing guitar at age ten and started his solo recording career in 1981, releasing Salvation Through Polyester the following year. His song “Teenie Weenie Meanie,” a tongue-in-cheek vignette about a lady wrestler, led to a six-month contract as a manager with Professional Wrestling From Florida (PWF). In 1990, his album Backslider’s Tractor Pull won Comedy Album of the Year from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. His discography also includes Deep Fried and Sanctified, A Turn for the Wirtz: Confessions of a Hillbilly Love God, Pianist Envy, Unchained Maladies, and Sermon from Bethlehem. He continues to perform concerts and teach workshops on blues and gospel music.
