Biography

René y René, a Latin pop duo from Laredo, Texas, consisted of René Ornelas and René Herrera. The group's music career began in the 1960s with their first single, "Angelito" ("Little Angel"), which reached number 43 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1964. This early success led to appearances on American Bandstand, making René y René among the first Chicano artists to perform on the show. Their breakthrough came with the release of "Lo Mucho que Te Quiero (The More I Love You)" in 1968, which reached number 2 on the Adult Contemporary chart and number 14 on the Hot 100 chart. They were inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame in 2001. René Herrera passed away on 20 December 2005, but René Ornelas continued performing under the name René René into the 2010s.
