Biography

Batsogile Lovederia "Rebecca" Malope, born on June 30, 1968, in Lekazi, Mpumalanga, South Africa, is a gospel singer. As a child, she sang hymns in her local church and later joined a gospel group, which led her to Johannesburg. Her musical career began in 1984, and she entered the Shell Road to Fame television contest in 1985. In 1987, Malope won the contest with "Shine On" (1987), dedicated to political unrest during Apartheid in South Africa. She released her debut album Sthembile Kuwe and achieved a breakthrough with Rebecca Sings Gospel (1992), which sold over one million copies. Malope released numerous albums, including Umoya Wam (1994) and Shwele Baba (1995). She hosted her own syndicated television show, It's Gospel Time, between 2004 and 2019. In 2021, President Cyril Ramaphosa honored her with the Order of Ikhamanga for her distinguished contribution to South African music.
