Raúl Jaurena, born on August 26, 1941 in Montevideo, Uruguay, was an accordionist and composer known for his contributions to tango music. He began playing the bandoneon at a young age and joined a tango orchestra by eight, later playing in the Donato Raciatti Orchestra at fifteen. In the 1960s and 1970s, Jaurena established himself as a member and arranger for various tango ensembles across Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Venezuela. His move to New York in 1988 inspired him to explore improvisational tango. He collaborated with Astor Piazzolla at the Montreal Jazz Festival and formed the ensemble New York Buenos Aires Connection in 1990. Jaurena's work as musical director at Thalia Theatre in New York led to productions like Todo Tango (2001/2002), La Vida Es Tango (2003), Tangomania (2004), and Te Amo Tango (2005). He received a Latin Grammy nomination for "Tango Bar" (2002) and won the Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album with Te amo Tango in 2007. Jaurena passed away on January 5, 2021.
