Biography

Polysics is a Japanese techno/electronic band from Tokyo known for their high-energy "technicolor pogo punk" sound. Formed in 1997 by Hiroyuki Hayashi and influenced by bands like Devo, they signed with Ki/oon Records (a Sony Music Japan subsidiary) in 2000. Their early albums—Neu (2000) , Eno(2001) , For Young Electric Pop(2002) —showcased their unique blend of punk energy and synthesizer-driven melodies. In 2003, they gained international attention with the release of their National P album and a tour captured on the DVD PippikkippippiP In USA . Their compilation album Polysics or Die!!!! (2004) was released in Europe and the U.S., followed by the critically acclaimed Now Is the Time! in 2006, which included the single "Lucky Star." In 2007, Polysics signed with MySpace Records for a US re-release of their compilation, now titled Polysics or Die!!!! Vista (2007) , marking their ten-year anniversary. Their subsequent albums—We Ate the Machine (2008) and covers like Buck-Tick's "Sid Vicious on the Beach" (2012)—continued to push boundaries in electronic music. In 2018, they started a side project called The Vocoders, paying homage to Kraftwerk's presentation model. Despite lineup changes and hiatuses, Polysics remains influential in the Japanese music scene.
