Biography

Leroy Phillip Mitchell, known professionally as Phillip Mitchell, and born on June 27, 1944, in Louisville, Kentucky, is an American R&B singer-songwriter and producer. He began his musical journey initially learning trumpet before teaching himself guitar and piano. Mitchell's early career included stints with local groups such as the Checkmates and the Cash Registers. In 1969, he signed with Muscle Shoals Sound label as a songwriter, where he penned hits like "It Hurts So Good" for Millie Jackson and "Starting All Over Again" for Mel and Tim. Mitchell's solo career took off in the mid-1970s with singles like "There's Another in My Life", which reached number 58 on the R&B chart in 1975. He signed with Atlantic Records in 1978, releasing albums Make It Good (1978) and Top of the Line (1979), both featuring his own compositions. Mitchell's career saw a resurgence in the late 2000s with the release of the compilation album Something New to Do: The Phillip Mitchell Songbook in 2004.
