Biography
Peter Roy Katin, also known as Peter Katin, born on November 14, 1930, in London, was a pianist and pedagogue of Anglo-Canadian nationality. He began his musical education at the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 12, studying under Harold Craxton. Katin's first public appearance was at Wigmore Hall in December 1948, where he performed works by Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, and Chopin. His career took off with his debut at the Proms in 1952 and a notable performance of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto in 1953. In 1958, Katin became the first British pianist to tour the Soviet Union post-war. Throughout his career, he released numerous albums, including Liszt Recital No. 2 (1954) and Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 (1971). He was known for his mastery of romantic and impressionist music, particularly the works of Chopin. Katin also conducted concertos by Mozart and Beethoven from the keyboard. His final recital at Wigmore Hall took place in January 2004. Peter Roy Katin passed away on March 19, 2015.
