Biography
Penelope Swales is an Australian folk singer-songwriter, instrument maker, legal aid lawyer, and activist from Melbourne, born in the Dandenong Ranges. Swales began her career in 1993 following a period of homelessness in her youth. Working with instrument maker Jack Spira, she began constructing instruments such as kalimbas from gourd shells, a craft for which she achieved recognition. Swales released her debut album, Between Light And Dark, in 1993. Her subsequent discography includes Returning on Foot (1995), Homemade Wine (1997), Justifying Your Longings to the Doctor (1998), and Skin: Deep â Polymorphous Love Songs (2007). In 2007, she performed at Poly Pride Day in New Yorkâs Central Park and toured Europe in 2008 with the band Totally Gourdgeous. Swales later qualified as a legal aid lawyer while maintaining her career in music and social protest.
