Patti Jo was an American soul and funk singer, active in the early 1970s and best known today for the cult track "Make Me Believe in You". Although her recording career was brief, her work has gained lasting recognition among collectors and lovers of rare soul. Younger sister of Carolyn Crawford, Ethel Patricia Demps was born in Otter Creek, Florida, on September 13, 1947. She grew up in DeLand, before moving to Miami. After taking part in singing competitions, she was noticed by radio station WMBM and met her mentor Barry Smith. She moves to New York and performs in the Broadway musical Purlie. After her first single for Scepter, "Ain't No Love Lost" (1972), her next , "Make Me Believe in You" (1973), recorded for Wand, became a classic for Northern Soul fans, appearing on several compilations and reissued by various labels. Back in DeLand, Patti Jo continued to perform in the 1980s, recording with her husband, Edwin Butler (former member of The Prolifics). Patti Jo died on July 30, 2007 at the age of 59.
