Biography

Papaya was a short-lived South Korean all-girl pop group formed in 2000 by members Kang Se-jung, Joo Yeun-jung, Cho Hye-kyung, Hwang Yoon-mi, and Kang Kyoung-ah. Their debut album, 동화 (Fairy Tale), was released in 2000, under the labels 1 Star Music and Synnara Music. The five-piece quickly captured public attention, in part due to renowned composers like Joo Young-hoon, Yoon Il-sang, Jo Gyu-man, and Lee Gyeong-seop contributing to their debut. 동화 (Fairy Tale) reached Number 27 on South Korea's Circle Chart and sold over 32,000 copies. Members Hwang Yoon-mi and Kang Kyoung-ah departed before the group started working on their follow-up album. Their sophomore effort, Violet, was released in 2001 via Cream Entertainment, peaking at Number 29 in South Korea. Later that same year, Papaya announced their disbandment. 2016 saw a brief reunion when Papaya came together for JTBC's music program, Two Yoo Project Sugar Man, releasing a digital single "눈물이 펑펑" alongside Seo Yoon Mi from Black Swan. Simultaneously, another girl group, OH MY GIRL, paid homage by re-recording Papaya's "Listen to My Word" from the Fairy Tale album, including it in their chart-topping single album of the same name.
