Biography

Otto Joachim was a German-born Canadian violist and composer. Joachim trained as a violinist in Düsseldorf and at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne. In 1934, Joachim left Nazi Germany and played in Singapore and Shanghai. Joachim settled permanently in Montreal in 1949, working as a player, teacher, instrument builder, and composer. Joachim played in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and taught violin and viola at McGill Conservatory and the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal starting in 1956. Notable works include String Quartet (1960), which combined twelve-tone music with classical techniques, and a multi-channel electroacoustic work for Expo 67. Joachim received an honorary doctorate from Concordia University in 1994 and was named an Honorary Member of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community in 1986. Joachim died in 2010.
