Opiate for the Masses was an American alternative metal group from Los Angeles, California. Formed in 1999 by Ron Underwood on vocals, Elias Mallin on drums, Jim Kaufman on guitar and keyboards, and Dustin Lyon on guitar, the band's name was a play on Karl Marx's famous quote, "Religion is the opium of the people." The group released the EP Goodbye in 2002. In 2005, Opiate for the Masses signed with Warcon Enterprises and released the full-length album, The Spore. This period saw lineup changes including Seven Antonopoulos on drums and Anna K. on bass. They toured extensively, supporting acts such as Static-X, Avenged Sevenfold, My Chemical Romance, and Disturbed. In 2008, the band signed with Century Media and released their final album Manifesto, followed by a tour with Filter. Opiate for the Masses disbanded in 2009.
