Claude Antoine Jean Georges Napoléon Coste was born on June 27, 1805, in Amondans, France. He began his musical journey under the tutelage of his mother and later became a teacher himself, performing in concerts across Franche-Comté. In 1829 or 1830, at age 24, Coste moved to Paris, where he studied under Fernando Sor and quickly established himself as the leading French virtuoso guitarist. Despite declining demand for guitarists in Paris, Coste achieved financial stability as a professional musician and composer. He self-published many of his works due to the lack of publishers interested in his music. Coste was influenced by Early Classical-Romantic composers like Hector Berlioz. In 1863, an injury to his shoulder and arm temporarily halted his concert performances, but he continued working and performing until 1881. After Sor's death, Coste edited and republished Sor's original method for guitar. He died on January 14, 1883, leaving behind a significant catalogue of original compositions.
