Murray Edward McLauchlan, also known as Murray McLauchlan, was born on June 30, 1948, in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and immigrated to Canada at age five. He is a Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and harmonica player. He began performing at Toronto coffeehouses by 17. He moved to New York City in the 1960s, but had little success in promoting his musical career there. He returned to Toronto and signed with True North Records in 1970, releasing his album Songs from the Street in 1971. His breakthrough came with "The Farmer's Song" (1973), which won a Juno Award. Notable songs include "Whispering Rain" and "Down by the Henry Moore". He won eleven Juno Awards between the 1970s and 1980s, was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016, received a Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2018, and was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, presented to him by Gordon Lightfoot.
