Biography

Mikhail Saulovich "Mischa" Elman, born on January 20, 1891, in Talnoïe, Russian Empire, was an American violinist of Russian origin. He began playing the violin at a young age under his grandfather Josef's guidance and started formal training with Alexander Fiedelmann in 1897. Elman gave his first concert in 1899 and was admitted to the conservatoire impérial de Saint-Pétersbourg under Leopold Auer in 1901. His international debut occurred in Berlin in 1904, followed by tours across Europe and the United States. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1923. Elman's discography included recordings of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. He passed away on April 5, 1967, in New York City.
